Fall 2016
LAW510  A  INTERNATIONAL TRADE LAW

Course Description
This course is designed to introduce students to the basic principles of international economic law, with particular focus on the international legal instruments and institutions of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The course will review the basic disciplines of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), as they relate both to economic and non-economic interests, such as the protection of public health and the environment. The course will also introduce students to the basic principles of contingent trade remedies (anti-dumping, countervailing duties and safeguards), subsidies disciplines, and WTO dispute settlement. Students will have the opportunity to apply the relevant legal disciplines and improve their litigation skills through a simulated dispute which reproduces a real-life WTO dispute.

Please note -This course is offered in a compressed format- it will meet over the course of six weeks in two distinct periods: August 22nd-September 9th and October 17th to November 4th.
