Summer 2017
LAW566  AW  MEMOS, PLEADINGS AND MOTIONS

Course Description
Memos, Pleadings, and Motions is an intensive writing course that hones a key skill for legal practice: transforming a predictive memo into a persuasive court filing. The course begins with lessons on argument structure, legal research, grammar, and citations. We then focus on three cases, two civil and one criminal, with weekly writing assignments. For each case, students will conduct research and write an office memo. After receiving the professor’s feedback, students will expand their memo arguments into either a pleading or a motion. Class lectures will cover legal rules and issues, writing strategies, professional demands, and client advocacy.
