Spring 2018
LAW537  A  ADVANCED TOPICS IN FAMILY LAW

Course Description
This one week course focuses on the real world practice of family law. There are many misconceptions about what constitutes the practice of family law. This course will highlight both the substantive law, such as the statutory framework, rules of procedure, and leading Supreme Court cases, along with practical examples of what really goes on in family court. The class materials will include the statutes, rules, cases, financial disclosure forms and some controversial rulings by local judges. Students will be expected to apply these class materials to a case, the fact pattern for which will be provided. Students will be graded on a combination of (a) Class participation, (b) Written outline to be submitted on Saturday, (c) Case analysis and question and answer period.

Short Course Attendance Policy Due to the small number of meetings, attendance to all meetings/classes for short courses is mandatory. Students who miss more than one class session (80 minute) of a 1-credit short course are subject to administrative withdrawal and will have a W for the course on their transcripts.
