Spring 2018
LAW537  A  ADVANCED TOPICS IN FAMILY LAW

Course Description
This is a one week course that delves into the real world practice of family law. Although there are many misconceptions about what constitutes family law by both lawyers and lay people, this course gives the student the opportunity to study contested matrimonial litigation in order to gain a realistic insight into this complex but fascinating area. This course will highlight both the substantive law, such as the statutory framework, rules of procedure, and leading Supreme Court cases, along with practical examples of what really goes on in family court. The class materials will include the statutes, rules, cases, financial disclosure forms and some controversial rulings by local judges. Students will be graded on a combination of (a) class participation, and (b) a final exam that will include a written submission and practical application.

Short Course Attendance Policy Due to the small number of meetings, attendance to all meetings/classes for short courses is mandatory. Students who miss more than one class session (80 minute) of a 1-credit short course are subject to administrative withdrawal and will have a W for the course on their transcripts.
