This is a week long course that identifies and discusses the complex legal and business problems that faces the professional sports franchises. This course will culminate in the students presenting a solution to a hypothetical legal/business problem. This course will be taught by a team of 4 teachers, 2 private practice attorneys and 2 lawyers who are employed by professional sports teams. This course will include classroom primers on the legal issues that teams face, including: 1. Ownership Issues; 2. Employment and player conduct issues; 3. Facility management and public-private partnership issues; 4. Endorsement, licensing and branding; and 5. Privacy issues);. In addition to the classroom portion of the course, you will be broken up into 4 teams. Your team is tasked with crafting a business and legal solution to the hypothetical problem set forth on the following page. To assist in crafting a solution, your team will be paired with one of the instructors and will meet daily to craft a solution to the hypothetical. At the end of the week, your team will have 20 minutes to present their solution to a representative of team ownership. That individual will then judge which of the teams provided the best solution. The solution will be judged on the following criteria: 1. The basis in the law; 2. Business and political practicalities; 3. General preparedness; 4. Creativity; and, 5. The manner of presentation.
