Course Description
|
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course examines the growing and transformative body of law that governs sports betting in the United States. This course will instruct on the key laws, regulations and policies that affect sports betting. To that end, this course will offer insights on the most influential developments—including significant sports betting and match-fixing controversies, the rise and fall of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), the potential application the federal Wire Act and related federal gaming laws to sports betting, the differing impacts of state gaming laws on sports betting, and an examination of the possible legal and regulatory frameworks in a post-PASPA world.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion, students will be able to:
1)Understand the most essential aspects of sports betting law and regulation in the United States.
2)Gain critical insights into how the current legal and regulatory framework in sports betting is shaped by historical patterns, judicial decisions, and prospective trends.
3)Understand specific gaming laws and how those laws interact with regulatory objectives.
4)Understand the interplay between federal and state gaming laws as they pertain to sports betting,
5)Understand the regulatory frameworks that govern sports betting and related gaming industries.
Short Course Attendance Policy Due to the small number of meetings, attendance to all meetings/classes for short courses is mandatory. Students who miss more than one class session (80 minute) of a 1-credit short course are subject to administrative withdrawal and will have a W for the course on their transcripts.

Method of Evaluation:
Students will be graded on class participation (25%) and take home essay (75%) due 2 weeks after the end of the class. Participation consists of class discussion + bringing articles and other materials to the class. With the professor’s permission, you may elect to take this course on a pass/fail basis.
