Fall 2019
LAW157  A  INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY FOR BUSINESS LAWYERS

Course Description
This course aims to prepare students to practice in general corporate areas where they may have some matters touching on intellectual property. We begin with some of the justifications for the field. We then explore trade secrets in some depth because they are the most common form of intellectual asset. We will then conduct some comparisons of patent, copyright, and trademark law, exploring the ways in which these three bodies of law interact with each other and offer different—sometimes complementary, sometimes contradictory—ways to promote creation and usage of information. Finally, time permitting, we will explore how a particular industry deals with issues that arise across doctrinal areas. The course is designed to complement other IP courses. You will probably get more out of it if you have taken one or two of patent, copyright, and trademark law. If you have taken none of those, you might expect to spend some more time figuring out the basics, which we will cover but not in great detail. If you have taken all three of those, you might find some portions of the course redundant. If you would like to discuss whether taking this course fits your academic and career plans, I would be happy to do so.
