LAW755  A  HEALTH LAW AND POLICY

Course Description
This course will provide an introduction to the various bodies of law governing the United States health care system. Topics will include the physician-patient relationship, health care financing (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, private health insurance), the regulation of health care professionals and hospitals, and medical malpractice. The course will place a special emphasis on health care reform and the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). Students will learn about the origins and goals of the ACA, its impacts on the health care system, and the legal and political controversies surrounding the law. Throughout, the course will explore how the health care system has shaped the development of the laws that govern it, as well as how these laws have in turn influenced the delivery of health care.
