Spring 2020
LAW679  A  INTRODUCTION TO CORPORATE FINANCE FOR LAWYERS

Course Description
An introduction to basic principles of firm valuation. There will be four modules of materials. The first module will include (1) the time value of money—the discounting of future payment streams; (2) the concept of net cash flow (as opposed to net income) as the amount to be discounted in ascertaining the present value of a firm; and (3) the ascertainment of a risk adjusted discount rate. The second module will situate these concepts in basic financial economics, looking at portfolio theory and the Capital Asset Pricing Model. The third module will take up stock market pricing and its relationship with fundamental value. The fourth module will look into hedging to reduce risk and introduce basic derivative contracts. The materials will be provided.

Short Course Attendance Policy
Due to the small number of meetings, attendance to all meetings/classes for short courses is mandatory. Students who miss more than one class session (80 minute) of a 1-credit short course are subject to administrative withdrawal and will have a W for the course on their transcripts.
