Summer 2020
LAW806  DS  COVID -19: LAWYERING IN A PANDEMIC EXPERIENTIAL PROJECT

Course Description
The Miami Law National Lawyers Guild (NLG) Chapter has partnered with The NLG South Florida Chapter, WeCount!, and HOPE on the Wage Theft Advocacy Project (WTAP). Students in the WTAP work in teams to represent a client who has had wages stolen by their employer. Many clients are particularly vulnerable to wage theft, such as domestic workers, farmworkers, and day laborers. Law students gain experience in many aspects of direct legal work by representing their client at every step of the administrative hearing process and presenting the case to a Wage Theft Administrative Judge. Oscar LondoƱo, Executive Director of WeCount!, supervises each team with the support of student project leaders. Although hours will vary depending on the stage of the case, participants should expect to spend approximately 4-6 hours per week on this project. Any student who wants to apply MUST be available to attend the initial training on Saturday, May 23 from 10am-2pm (via Zoom) and must be available to meet every other Thursday at 6pm (via Zoom) throughout the summer for case rounds and additional training.
