LAW742  AS  MEDIATION

Course Description
This course gives students the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of mediation theory and practice. Students will become acquainted with the law and literature of mediation and dispute resolution and achieve a working knowledge of theories and techniques of negotiation. A variety of simulation exercises and role plays will be employed, along with readings, to encourage a critical assessment of mediation concepts, conflict resolution style and practices. Students will have the opportunity to develop their personal styles in assessing and managing conflict. Critical issues such as the ethical responsibility of the mediator, the role of law and lawyers in the process, dealing with power imbalances, confidentiality and enforcement will be examined.
