Fall 2021
LAW555  A  CLIMATE CHANGE LAW AND POLICY

Course Description
This two-credit course/seminar examines cutting-edge issues relating to the regulation of climate change. We will approach climate change from an international, national and local perspective. The course will begin with an overview of climate change and the various legal and policy tools that have been adopted or proposed to address climate change through mitigation and adaptation. Specific topics will reflect the interests of participants in the class and may include legal restrictions on land use in vulnerable areas; international climate change litigation; displacement and relocation of populations as a result of climate change; the intersection of human rights and climate change; environmental justice; sustainable investment in natural resources; food security; the built environment, infrastructure and the insurance industry. Law students wishing to fulfill a writing requirement will be required to prepare and present a research paper and must be prepared to submit a research question and proposal before the third meeting of the class. Students not seeking to fulfill the writing requirement will do a take-home exam.

If you have not met the prerequisites for this seminar, but you would like to be considered for admission - please contact Professor Porras as iporras@law.miami.edu - indicating the nature of our interest and any relevant background.
