Spring 2014
LAW516  A  APPLIED TOPICS IN ADVANCED COPYRIGHT LAW

Course Description
Attendance is mandatory at all sessions

The class will work through 4-5 topics, based on actual cases, exposing the students to panoply of copyright issues, elements, defenses, and strategies. Examples may include: termination of transfer in the hit album from 25 years ago, Blondie's Parallel Lines; division of rights in David Belasco's classic play, Madame Butterfly , and how the Second Circuit juxtaposed Giacomo Puccini's unparalleled opera against Paramount Pictures' movie version (sans "Un bel di," or any other bel canto, for that matter); unauthorized use of Rob Zombie's music in a Mazda commercial, causing his fan base to turn against their formal idol as a "sell out"; The Rubinoos, a one-hit wonder from the 1970s with "Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," who were none too amused to hear Avril Lavigne's lyrics "I don't like your girlfriend" in 2007; plus negotiating practical issues out of forming your own rock band and how the iTunes royalties gets divided between record label and the recording artist.
