Fall 2017
LAW392  A  ART LAW

Course Description
This course examines the intersection of law and the visual arts within the U.S. legal system. Topics may include such issues as artists' rights in their works; the art market, with an emphasis on problems of authenticity and good title; the fate of art in times of armed conflict; and art museums. There is no required text for this class. Reading assignments will be posted on-line and distributed in hard copy via the Copy Center; the readings will include cases, articles, international treaties, statutes, and other materials. Students are expected to prepare the reading assignments completely and with care and to participate meaningfully and thoughtfully in class discussion. Please note this class meets once each week for 170 minutes. The course will require students to prepare a research paper and to present a near-final draft of that paper in class for discussion. The research paper may satisfy the writing requirement.
