A LAW, POLICY, AND TECHNOLOGY

Course Description
|
Using the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative as a case study, this course will teach students how to address a contemporary social problem using a three-pronged approach: law, policy, and technology. The course will focus on countering the problem of technology-facilitated abuse. Readings and guest speaker topics will cover timely, significant issues regarding each of the three prongs: In law, we will focus on First Amendment doctrine, harassment laws, “revenge porn” laws, privacy laws, and the Communications Decency Act Section 230. In policy, we will explore the various approaches to online abuse taken by civil liberties groups, privacy watchdogs, and educational institutions. In technology, we will examine reforms regarding online abuse made by major technology companies and social media platforms (including Google, Facebook, and Twitter) and the continuing challenges they face.
Students taking Law, Policy, and Technology also have the option of taking the Cyber Civil Rights Practicum either in the same semester or a later semester.
